Clean Beaches Week, the “Earth Day” of beaches, is celebrated annually from July 1 -7. It’s organized by the Clean Beaches Coalition (CBC) to promote clean, healthy, and well managed beaches across the globe. The holiday focuses on 4 themes; environment, dining, recreation, and travel, to highlight the importance of beaches in our lives. The U.S. has no shortage of beautiful coastlines worthy of celebration and protection. We’ve picked a few that definitely meet every need on your “Dream Vacation Checklist”.

For the Family

Virginia Beach is the perfect place to plan some fun for your whole family with a plethora of resorts and attractions to keep you busy.  All kids are welcome at Grommet Island Beach Park, a 100% wheelchair accessible playground. Make some memories while riding bikes along the 3-mile boardwalk or take a surfing lesson at Resort Beach. Everyone is sure to be speechless in the presence of the 34-foot bronze statue of King Neptune, towering over visitors on 31st Street. Virginia Beach will provide you with a vacation the whole family will remember for years to come.

For the Shopaholic

Carmel-By-The-Sea, on California's Monterey Peninsula, is the prime location for anyone looking to find a little retail therapy during their beach vacation. Boasting names like Coach, Kate Spade, Anthropologie, and Tommy Bahama, in addition to charming, independent shops, Carmel is perfect for even the most selective shopper. Any time not spent lounging around on a white sand beach or attending a wine tasting can be spent browsing the outdoor mall or one of the family-owned boutiques. The Carmel Plaza, a three-level, open air shopping center is an “elegant, yet casual shopping and dining experience”. Whether you are looking for something unique to take home or content window shopping, Carmel is sure to provide you with a singular vacation shopping experience.

For the Dog Lover

For those of us who can’t stand to leave our furry friend at home check out Mad River County Park, on California’s Redwood Coast. In addition to excellent fishing and wildlife attractions, this beach permits your well-behaved pooch to accompany you, OFF-LEASH! Enjoy watching for roosting barn owls and black-capped chickadees while your dog splashes in the waves and plays on the dunes. Just be sure to pick up after your furry best friend.

For the Surfer

How could we possibly compile a list of beaches without a nod to the paradise that is Hawaii? Regardless of your level of expertise, the Island of Oahu has what any surfer is looking for.  If you’re a surfer who is just getting their feet wet, the calm waters of Waikiki, on the south shore of Honolulu, is perfect for learning. The big wave seeker should head to Oahu’s illustrious North Shore. Of course, there are all manner of opportunities for adventure on the Island. Take a break in between the waves and go snorkeling or whale watching. You can be sure there will never be a dull moment!

For the History Buff

For those of us searching for a beach that will go down in vacation history, look no further than St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra Beach. Situated on Florida’s Historic Coast, Ponte Vedra Beach is home to various historic and cultural sites. Ponte Vedra Beach has several statues depicting Juan Ponce de León, the famous Spanish explorer and conquistador, that are sure to impress. For a culturally rich experience head to the world-famous Ponce de León’s Fountain of Youth Archeological Park in St. Augustine. The Park is located on what is documented to be the site of the Timucuan Indian village, as well as the original settlement of Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the Gulf while learning all about its fascinating history.

For the Night Owl

If you are looking for a beach filled with energy and fun, where better than Miami Beach, FL? This is so much more than a party destination. It’s vibrant culture with its signature art deco backdrop is perfect for an unforgettable vacation. Head to South Beach for world-class hotels, dining, art galleries, and the hottest nightlife Florida has to offer. Hit Mango’s Tropical Café, on Ocean Dr. for salsa, merengue, and bachata dancing or check out Haulover Park for fishing, tennis, and golf. No matter what you choose to do, Miami Beach promises to be an unforgettable experience.

For the Placid Beach Goer

For those of us looking for a more peaceful beach experience you can head up north to Roque Bluffs State Park in Maine. The beach is less likely to be crowded with thrill seekers and rowdy partiers, so you can enjoy a quiet day with a good book. The tranquil setting is ideal for wildlife watching. Catch sight of an uncommon species of waterfowl or even a bald eagle while you lounge on the shore. The crescent beach is sandwiched between the brisk, salty water of the ocean and a shallow, warm water pond for a delightfully juxtaposed experience. Take a stroll through the orchards or kayak across the pond. Either way you’ll find yourself enjoying a relaxing experience.
