International Day for Disaster Reduction is observed every October 13th by the UN General Assembly.  The day celebrates how communities around the globe are reducing their risk and exposure to disasters.  It also seeks to promote disaster prevention, mitigation, and preparedness.  2017 has seen a swell in the intensity and frequency of natural disasters compared to previous years, a prime example being the California wildfires that continue to rage across the state’s wine country.  When disasters occur, it’s important to recognize the circumstances surrounding them so we can better prepare for future ones by building more disaster-resilient communities and nations.  Below we’ve outlined some of the driving factors that have been identified as causes for the magnitude of the California wildfires.
